About Our Church

Hazel Crest Community UMC has served Hazel Crest and the surrounding areas for over 120 years, worshiping in our current building since 1961. We are a diverse, mission-focused congregation committed to making disciples and transforming the world through the love of Christ. Led by both clergy and laity, we’re dedicated to creative worship, authentic fellowship, and the unfiltered truth of God’s Word. Our small groups meet real-life needs with compassion and connection as we continue to grow as a reconciling, inclusive church that welcomes all into the body of Christ.

Our Roots
Founded in 1893
  • Began with a small group meeting in the farmhouse of Mr. & Mrs. John Baker at 167th & Dixie Hwy
  • Early members included village founders William C. & Carrie McClintock
  • Outgrew the farmhouse and began meeting in the old Illinois Central depot, which also served as the real estate office and post office
First Church Building
Constructed 1894–1897
  • Built by local volunteers during a time of high unemployment following the Pullman Strike
  • Led by carpenters Nathan Sudds and Wilheim
  • Women contributed with painting, support, and refreshments
  • Dedicated on September 12, 1897
  • Truly a community-built church
Embracing Diversity
A Turning Point in the Late 1960s
